Diamond grinding addresses serviceability problems but not their root cause. For example, diamond grinding can substantially reduce the roughness on a faulted rigid pavement, but it will not address the cause of faulting, nor will it prevent roughness in the future as a result of additional faulting.
When diamond grinding is used to retexture an existing concrete pavement, any concrete pavement preservation activities, except for joint sealing, shall be completed prior to any diamond grinding. After diamond grinding is completed, all joints and cracks that were diamond ground shall be cleaned and sealed in accordance with plans.
