I plan on making it a Vshaped forge with a pipe running along the bottom for air supply, and have sand and a refractory mix build up the walls. I was wondering if anybody had any advice on a good plaster of paris/perlite mix or similar compound that would suffice?

Perlite dust is more common in refractory, but I have yet to find a good reason why that is, other than the perlite manufacturing association website pushing it as an alternative use for the stuff. Both perlite and vermiculite dusts are (like all similar dusts) extremely bad for your lungs and carcinogenic. Much more so than cement or plaster.

Re: Perlite or Vermiculite insulation ? Thanks guys, I guess I`ll try to loose fill it with Vermiculite then. I will let it dry for a total of 3 weeks, and then try a big fire and see how long I have to heat it to feel heat on the outside of the cladding, so I know how long it takes to fully heat the oven.
